Trump Signs Executive Order to Boost AI Efforts
On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order designed to enhance the country’s efforts in artificial intelligence (AI), introducing a new initiative dubbed the Genesis Mission aimed at accelerating AI’s application in scientific fields.
The Genesis Mission tasks the Department of Energy (DOE), the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and national laboratories to collaborate with private companies. The goal here is to share federal data sets, advanced supercomputing capabilities, and scientific facilities.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright commented, stating, “The private sector is deploying artificial intelligence at scale, but with a slightly different focus: language, business, processes, and consumer services.” He added, “What we’re doing here is focusing these efforts on scientific discoveries and engineering advances. To do that, we need datasets across our national laboratories.”
Additionally, the executive order seeks to establish an integrated platform designed to speed up scientific discovery—connecting AI capabilities directly with scientists, engineers, and technical staff, as well as the scientific equipment available at laboratories, as shared by officials from the White House.
During a U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, President Trump suggested similar initiatives were in the works, expressing hope to “build the largest, most powerful, most innovative AI ecosystem in the world.”
This effort follows the release of Trump’s AI policy document earlier in July, titled “Win the Race: America’s AI Action Plan.” This document outlines a strategy to enhance AI innovation, maintain U.S. leadership in international AI diplomacy and security, and engage the private sector in constructing and managing AI infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Trump’s administration continues to evaluate additional executive orders regarding AI, with indications that more could be on the horizon. Reports have mentioned potential orders directing the Justice Department to challenge states that create their own AI regulations, a move that has raised some eyebrows.
President Trump remarked that a nationwide set of AI regulations would be a “disaster,” emphasizing the intention to simplify processes—aiming for a streamlined approval process rather than navigating through all 50 states.
