Trump Signs Secure America Act into Law

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump enacted the Secure America Act, a significant legislation that allocates nearly $70 billion aimed at enhancing federal immigration enforcement throughout the remainder of his presidency.

The House, with a narrow 214-212 vote along party lines, pushed the bill through despite unified opposition from Democrats, who had made efforts to block the funding. During the signing in the Oval Office, President Trump criticized Democratic lawmakers for their prolonged attempts to delay the legislation.

The White House has outlined that the act provides substantial resources for immigration enforcement agencies until September 2029, designed to shield operations from potential future political deadlock. This includes $38 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), $26 billion for Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and an additional $5 billion for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to address unforeseen expenses.

“It’s long overdue,” remarked House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). “We need to ensure funding for border security and immigration enforcement, and it’s unfortunate that Republicans have to navigate this alone.”

For quite some time, Congressional Democrats have used federal funding discussions to advocate for immigration reforms, including increased regulations and oversight. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has labeled federal immigration officers as “violent” and claims there is a lack of accountability within the agency.

“Republicans are now advocating for an additional $70 billion for ICE and the mass deportation efforts led by Donald Trump, which includes no oversight, no accountability, and no guidelines,” Jeffries stated.

In contrast, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) pushed back, asserting that Democrats are not adequately supporting law enforcement.

“Let me be clear, if you vote yes, you are not just voting for border security. You are also supporting funding for law enforcement,” Scalise noted. “Conversely, voting no suggests a stance against police funding.”

President Trump signed the Secure America Act into law today. The legislation focuses on funding for ICE and the U.S. Border Patrol, enhancing resources for border security and immigration measures to tackle illegal immigration.
