Robbery Suspect Caught in a Twist of Fate
It seems like karma really does exist.
A man named Jalen Godard, 29, found himself in a rather ironic situation after he allegedly stole a car and committed a robbery at a nearby store. The irony was not lost on the police, who couldn’t help but chuckle as they placed him in handcuffs.
Minutes before a Verizon store was robbed on Baltimore National Pike, Godard claimed his truck had been stolen from a nearby parking lot in Baltimore. It sets quite the stage, doesn’t it?
Footage from Howard County police showed Godard walking up to officers and stating, “Hey, someone stole my truck.” He, rather boldly, claimed he was at a McDonald’s when his vehicle was taken.
As the officers investigated, they uncovered more than they expected. The video made its way to the officers as they conducted a search in the Verizon store, where they found blood on the broken window that suggested how the entry was made.
When questioned, Godard’s explanations didn’t quite hold up. Officers noted he was acting oddly, keeping his left hand tucked away in his sweatshirt pocket while he talked.
One officer asked to see his hands, to which Godard obliged—but the twist? His left hand emerged covered in blood, leading to his immediate arrest.
“Have you been to the Verizon store? Your hands and glasses are covered in blood,” they pointed out, to which he replied defensively.
Watching the body camera footage revealed Godard vehemently denying he had ever been in the store, despite the surveillance footage showing a figure resembling him, clad in black, moving around the Verizon store and grabbing items.
Even after being patted down and finding more blood on his shirt, he maintained his stance. “Someone stole my truck, dude,” he kept insisting.
“Alright, that’s it. You can be honest about this anytime you want,” an officer remarked, trying to give him a chance to confess.
Yet, Godard repeated, “They stole my truck, dammit,” with his hands shackled behind his back.
“It’s kind of karma, isn’t it?” the officer quipped.
In an almost comedic response, Godard began to say, “Well, I left the key in—” which prompted laughter from the officer before Godard was placed in the back of a police vehicle.
Ultimately, Godard was charged with robbery, theft, and criminal damage to property. Meanwhile, details about the alleged car thief remained unclear.
