Former President Trump slammed President Biden on Sunday, moments after the president announced he would not seek reelection, warning that the country would “suffer great pain” if Biden only served one term in office.
“Villain Joe Biden is not and never has been fit to run for President or hold the office of the Presidency!” Trump wrote to Truth Social on Sunday.“He got to the presidency on lies, fake news and never leaving his basement. Everyone around him, including his doctors and the media, knew he was incapable of being president, and he was.”
Trump, who became the Republican presidential nominee last week, pointed to the situation at the southern US border and claimed, without evidence, that people crossing the border are “not checked or vetted at all.”
“We will suffer greatly from his presidency, but the damage he caused will soon be repaired. Let’s Make America Great Again!” he added.
Trump’s comments came less than an hour after Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race, ending a five-decade political career.
Biden’s surprising decision follows weeks of mounting pressure from Democrats who worry about whether the president can beat Trump after his poor performance in last month’s debate, during which Biden frequently paused and appeared to lose his train of thought, raising concerns about his mental capacity and age.
At 81, Biden is the oldest serving US president and has faced repeated criticism about his age and fitness to serve.
Until Sunday, Biden and his campaign had maintained they intended to continue campaigning amid growing calls for him to step down.
The president said he plans to address the nation later this week about his decision to ultimately withdraw.
“Serving as your president has been the greatest honor of my life. While I intended to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and our country to step aside for the remainder of my term and focus solely on fulfilling the duties of my presidency,” Biden said in the letter, posted on social media.
Biden later endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee, and it is unclear whether she will face a challenger.
President Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., in a post on social platform “X” on Sunday, claimed Harris was even more liberal than Biden and incompetent.
“Kamala Harris owns Joe Biden’s entire left-wing policy record,” he wrote.
