Trump speaks with Putin to discuss the next steps in peace talks

After a meeting with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, former President Donald Trump stated that he had a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He shared this information on his Truth Social account, mentioning that he reached out to Putin to initiate a potential meeting between him and Zelensky.

Trump confirmed that he called Putin after the day’s discussions, suggesting a connection had been made for future talks. He emphasized that this initiative was just the starting point and not the final step for U.S. support in achieving peace.

Trump indicated that following the discussions with the two rival presidents, there would be a trilateral meeting involving the U.S. “Once that meeting happens,” he noted, “there will be conversations between both presidents and myself.” He described the day as a promising early phase in a conflict that has persisted for almost four years.

Yury Ushakov, a top aide to Putin, reported that the call between Trump and Putin lasted around 40 minutes and was described as “fun and very constructive.” Ushakov also mentioned that Putin expressed support for direct negotiations with the Ukrainian delegation.

Earlier in the day, discussions at the White House included opinions from European leaders, notably German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, who reportedly agreed that a meeting with Zelensky should take place in a couple of weeks. During an earlier exchange, Trump seemed to have a casual moment where he mentioned to French President Emmanuel Macron that Putin was interested in finding a resolution to the conflict.

Trump’s comments raised questions about the nature of the peace talks. He indicated that he doesn’t necessarily see a ceasefire as essential for peace, which might be a bit controversial among some observers. While there was an emphasis on constructive dialogue, it’s interesting how perspectives on what is needed for peace can vary quite significantly.

In this dynamic, it’s clear that ongoing conversations among leaders continue to unfold, though it remains to be seen what concrete outcomes will arise from these discussions. As things develop, it’s just a wait-and-see situation for everyone involved.
