Trump Signs Executive Order for AI Initiative
On Monday, President Trump announced the establishment of the “Genesis Mission,” an executive order aimed at reinforcing America’s leadership in artificial intelligence. Officials have compared this initiative to the historic Apollo program, which famously achieved the moon landing during the space race.
According to administration sources, this initiative is expected to “significantly accelerate the rate of scientific progress” by harnessing the immense computing power and resources available at the Department of Energy’s national laboratories to access and utilize federal data sets.
The initiative will involve collaboration between national labs and private companies, focusing on research that could have applications in fields like medicine, energy production, and engineering.
The executive order instructs Energy Secretary Chris Wright to “establish and operate a U.S. Science and Security Platform” intended to serve as the foundation for the mission.
This platform will integrate “high-performance computing resources, including DOE National Laboratory supercomputers and secure cloud-based AI computing environments,” which are designed to facilitate large-scale model training, simulations, and inference, as detailed in the order.
Wright is also tasked with pinpointing federal research facilities that can engage in AI-driven experimentation and manufacturing. He will seek to acquire data sets from federally funded research, academic institutions, and selected private sector partners.
The mission aims to consolidate scientific data from leading scientists across 17 national laboratories, the U.S. university system, and involved private companies, particularly those engaged in science, engineering, innovation, and energy.
During a briefing, officials assured reporters that the initiative would be mindful of copyright protections for published works. “We will take care to respect intellectual property rights,” one official stated, emphasizing that safeguarding copyright and classified information would be a priority throughout the mission’s duration.
“The Genesis mission will utilize AI to automate experimental design, accelerate simulations, and create predictive models for a range of subjects from protein folding to plasma dynamics,” one official shared. They indicated that this could drastically reduce discovery timelines from years to just days, empowering scientists to explore more ambitious hypotheses and achieve breakthroughs that have previously been beyond reach.
“With AI’s capabilities, America stands on the verge of a scientific revolution that could redefine its global scientific leadership,” they added.
The president signed this order amidst a political backdrop marked by rising electricity costs fueled by a surge in data center construction.
This month, the Department of Energy initiated partnerships with major players in chipmaking and computing, including Nvidia, Dell, AMD, and HPE, to support the mission. Reports indicate that these companies have expressed readiness to begin building supercomputing facilities at national labs immediately.
Officials also forecast substantial advancements in health sciences, suggesting that a better understanding of illnesses, including their chemistry and biology, may soon be achievable. While progress has been notable in the past five years, they believe that the next five will yield even more remarkable discoveries.
