President Trump announced late Monday that he was in talks with Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, regarding the sensitive issue of missing children.
In a post on True Social, Trump referred to von der Leyen as a “famous and highly respected president.” He emphasized the significance of the topic, stating, “This is also a big issue for my wife Melania. It’s at the top of the list, and the world needs to work together to address it and hopefully reunite these children with their families!”
While Trump didn’t elaborate, it’s noteworthy that over 19,000 Ukrainian children, allegedly taken by Russia since February 2022, might be part of the discussions. He mentioned that this matter holds personal importance for Melania Trump, who recently expressed her concerns about Ukrainian children in a letter to President Vladimir Putin.
In her letter, Melania remarked that “every child, no matter where they are born, shares the same quiet dream of love and safety,” which Trump presented to Putin in advance of an important summit in Alaska.
“Putin, I hope you agree that this simple yet profound idea speaks to the purity with which every generation begins life,” Melania added. “Today, some children are forced to suppress their joy amid the darkness around them.”
The First Lady concluded with a poignant call to action, urging Putin to “restore their laughter” on his own.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was in Washington for critical discussions with Trump and European leaders, responded by thanking Trump for bringing attention to “one of the most painful and difficult issues of this war: Russia’s appropriation of Ukrainian children.”
“We truly appreciate her compassion and the letter to Putin,” Zelensky stated, acknowledging that this issue lies at the heart of the war’s humanitarian challenges, affecting children, families, and the pain of separation.
He also noted that Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska had given Trump a “letter of thanks” to convey Melania’s response regarding the ongoing situation. Zelensky praised Melania’s voice as vital and empowering in their efforts to bring all children home and address the broader humanitarian crisis.
“Thousands of individuals need to be released,” he remarked, stressing that this effort is essential for fostering peace. “We are negotiating prisoner exchanges and are grateful for the strong friendships that support our cause,” he concluded, tagging the President of the European Commission in the post.
