Trump Downplays Ceasefire Need in Ukraine Conflict

During a high-profile meeting at the White House on Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, former President Donald Trump indicated that he does not believe a ceasefire is essential for resolving the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

When asked about potential consequences if a ceasefire were not established within a month, Trump noted his lack of concern about formally implementing a ceasefire. He pointed to various peace agreements he negotiated this year that took place amid active conflicts. “I don’t think a ceasefire is necessary,” he said. “If you look at the six deals that we settled this year, they were all during wars. I didn’t include a ceasefire.”

Trump emphasized the importance of moving directly towards a peace contract rather than merely halting hostilities. “I like the concept of a ceasefire for one reason,” he remarked. “It would stop people from getting killed immediately. But we can negotiate a peace deal while the fighting continues.” He added that halting the conflict prematurely could be detrimental to achieving a favorable resolution for either side.

This year alone, Trump has brokered several peace agreements, notably in regions like the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and earlier with Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Looking ahead, Trump mentioned an impending travel to Alaska for an in-person meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, insisting that serious repercussions could follow if Putin opts against concluding the war. Coinciding with this, Zelensky highlighted a lack of evident willingness on Russia’s part to end the conflict.

Since the war escalated in February 2024, Trump has maintained that had he been in office during Biden’s term, the situation would not have spiraled out of control. Following his meeting with Putin, which saw no agreement on a ceasefire or peace terms, Trump proposed that Ukraine consider a land exchange with Russia, arguing it might be the most pragmatic solution to end the ongoing conflict.

In prior efforts, Trump has supported ceasefire negotiations in other global disputes, such as the recent agreement between India and Pakistan. He expressed intention to revamp peace discussions around Ukraine, stating that a mere ceasefire would be insufficient for true resolution.

On the following Monday, Zelensky is expected to meet with several European leaders at the White House, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz.
