Trump and Zelensky Discuss Progress on Ukraine Peace Talks

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that peace discussions aimed at concluding the war in Ukraine are making headway after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Florida. They both recognized that there are still unresolved issues regarding territory, cease-fire terms, and the recognition of Ukraine, but they noted that notable progress had been achieved on a proposed 20-point plan.

Following their meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Trump and Zelensky informed reporters that weeks of talks involving officials from the U.S., Ukraine, the European Union, and NATO have brought them closer to a potential peace agreement, although some critical matters remain unsettled.

Trump indicated that negotiations have accelerated significantly over the past month, suggesting they are further along than ever before in the context of this conflict, but cautioned that the finalization of any deal hinges on addressing a few complicated issues.

“We could get very close,” said Trump. “There are one or two very thorny issues, very difficult problems. But I think we’re doing very well. We’ve made a lot of progress today, and over the last month, but this is not a one-day process. It’s a very complex problem.”

Zelensky Prepares New Peace Proposal Following European Cooperation

Zelensky supported Trump’s remarks, indicating that there is a substantial level of agreement on the framework of the peace proposal. He highlighted the success of ongoing diplomacy through various international meetings that led to their discussions in Florida.

According to Zelensky, negotiations have spanned several weeks in locations such as Geneva, Miami, Berlin, and Mar-a-Lago, with both U.S. and Ukrainian representatives working toward a unified peace plan. “We have discussed all aspects of the peace framework, including the 20-point peace plan, and we have achieved significant results, with 90% agreement,” he stated.

Growing Momentum for Peace, Yet Concerns Persist

The two leaders confirmed the involvement of European and NATO officials in the negotiation process, underlining that a joint conference call occurred following their meeting, including leaders from across Europe and international organizations.

Zelensky mentioned that they plan to reconvene in the coming weeks to resolve outstanding issues, and Trump expressed openness to hosting further discussions in Washington with European leaders and the Ukrainian delegation.

Despite the advancements, the status of territories, particularly Donbass, remains a challenging issue, with both Presidents acknowledging incompatible positions between Ukraine and Russia.

Timing is Key in Ongoing Negotiations

Trump suggested that timing may be critical; any delays could lead to further territorial losses. “Some of that land has been occupied,” he warned. “Some of that land may be for sale, but it’s likely to be occupied over the next few months. Should I sign a contract now?”

Zelensky emphasized that any final agreement must align with Ukrainian laws and the will of the populace, potentially requiring approval from parliament or through a referendum. “Our society must decide who will vote, because it is their land and not one man’s land,” he asserted. “This has been our country’s land for generations.”

Casualties and Public Pressure to End the Conflict

Trump reiterated his commitment to ending the conflict, citing the significant loss of life on both sides and noting that public opinion strongly favors an end to hostilities. “We want to see this end. We want this to end because we don’t want to see this many people die. We’re losing a huge number of people. This is the largest ever since World War II,” he remarked.
