Trump Calls for Change in Ukraine’s Leadership
On Saturday, former President Donald Trump remarked that “it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president.” This statement was made as he urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to refrain from attacking Russian oil refineries, a subject that has sparked a dispute between the two leaders in light of a recent U.S. deal with Moscow.
“It’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump told reporters outside the White House before heading off to a rally in Tennessee. He accused Zelenskyy of exacerbating global fuel issues by allowing strikes on Russian refineries.
“He’d better d— well stop,” Trump emphasized, advocating for a more cautious approach from Ukraine regarding attacks on Russian energy facilities. He warned of the potential repercussions on global energy supplies due to these actions.
Trump elaborated, stating, “We said, ‘you can do whatever you want to Russia, don’t hit the refineries,’ because that’s a world problem that’s caused.” He also criticized Zelenskyy for not reaching any agreements to put an end to the ongoing war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
He expressed frustration that Zelenskyy could have negotiated many deals yet failed to do so. This conversation surfaced after Zelenskyy voiced concerns regarding a new U.S. accord with Russia aimed at temporarily lifting sanctions on Russian diesel exports.
Trump confirmed that the U.S. had reached an agreement with Moscow that would allow restrictions on Russian diesel exports to be suspended until April 7, potentially flooding U.S. and global markets with millions of tons of diesel fuel, at a time when fuel prices are on the rise.
Nonetheless, Zelenskyy cautioned that this deal might enable Russia to gain additional funding for weaponry and continue its offensive against Ukraine.
The situation continues to intensify as both Russia and Ukraine ramp up assaults on crucial infrastructure, with Trump’s recent comments adding pressure on Zelenskyy to pursue negotiations to conclude the conflict with Russia.
