Former President Trump appeared to surprise many of his critics on Wednesday night with a rare burst of praise for former President Barack Obama, a move that was unexpected given the ideological differences between the two men.
“I like him,” Trump said of the Illinois Democrat in comments made to CNN.
“I think he’s a fine gentleman, but he’s been very soft on trade…. I happen to like him. I respect him and his wife,” Trump said.
During the panel that followed, CNN reporter Jamie Gangel asked, “Who is that man?”
The DNC portrays Harris as a law-and-order standard-bearer, despite her past comments about police militarization.
CNN host John King also seemed surprised, contrasting Trump’s comments with an interview he had with then-first-time candidate Barack Obama on the day he released his Hawaiian birth certificate under pressure from Trump.
But Trump’s remarks contrasted with comments Obama made about the tycoon later that evening in his speech at the Democratic National Convention.
Obama appeared to make an obscene hand gesture as he commented on Trump’s alleged obsession with crowd size, drawing loud laughter from the crowd.

“Here we have a 78-year-old billionaire who has been whining about his problems ever since he got on the golden escalator nine years ago,” Obama said, “and the constant complaining and frustration is exacerbated by his fear of losing to Kamala.”
“There are childish nicknames, crazy conspiracy theories, and a strange obsession with crowd sizes.”
Meanwhile, former First Lady Michelle Obama also slammed Trump for his comments that illegal immigration disproportionately affects minorities. In a June debate with President Biden, Trump said that the influx of immigrants was “taking jobs away from black people.”
Michelle Obama asked the Democratic National Convention audience if anyone would like to tell Trump that “the job he’s looking for right now might just be one of those black jobs.”

Asked about the discrepancy, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley said the DNC is no longer “Barack Obama’s Democrat Party.”
“Kamala Harris is even more dangerously liberal. As Attorney General of California, Harris defied the Obama Administration and allowed law enforcement to ignore ICE detentions. She also pushed the party further left by eliminating private health insurance, introducing job-killing Green New Scum, and spearheading runaway spending that will fuel inflation.”
