Trump Suggests Deals with Syria Following Meeting with Jihadi Leader

Trump Indicates Syria’s Potential Shift Towards Anti-ISIS Coalition

After a meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharah, President Donald Trump suggested that Syria might consider joining the anti-ISIS coalition and possibly engage in various agreements, including the Abraham Accords.

During a press interaction in the Oval Office, Trump was asked about his discussion with Sharah. He characterized him as a “very strong leader” and someone with a tough background. Trump emphasized that his administration aims to support Syria’s success.

One reporter inquired about any agreements reached during the meeting. Trump responded, noting Sharah’s resilience and their positive rapport. “I like him,” he stated. “I believe he has the potential to lead Syria to success, as it’s an important part of the Middle East.”

Trump also remarked on the current state of peace in the region, labeling it unprecedented in recent memory, and reaffirmed Syria’s significant role in this context.

Another question arose regarding an announcement related to a potential agreement between Syria and Israel or Syria’s involvement in the anti-ISIS coalition. Trump indicated that some announcement regarding Syria could be forthcoming. He expressed confidence in Sharah’s leadership abilities, acknowledging the challenges they both faced in their pasts. “We all have tough histories,” he said, reflecting on the complexities of their experiences.

Trump’s remarks followed a lengthy meeting where Sharah, who heads the al-Qaeda offshoot Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), aimed to assure the international community of his commitment to fostering a peaceful and democratic Syria.

Reportedly, Sharah entered the White House through a side entrance and spent about an hour and a half there. Afterward, he was met with support from a crowd waving Syrian flags. Neither the White House nor Sharah’s office released a statement immediately following the meeting, leaving details somewhat unclear.

The implications of Sharah’s visit were significant, as he attempted to reshape his image from a former al-Qaeda official to someone capable of leading a transition towards democracy.

Several congressional representatives, including Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) and Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), recently had discussions with Sharah. Mast shared insights from their meeting, describing their conversations about fostering a peaceful future devoid of war and extremism.

Mast noted that they were “two former soldiers and two former enemies,” and asked Sharah about their changing relationship. Sharah’s response focused on his desire to move beyond his past and be a strong ally to the U.S.

Wilson expressed gratitude for meeting Sharah and stressed the potential for a free and prosperous Syria, viewing this as a critical opportunity in a post-Cold War context.
