Plattner Suspends Senate Campaign Amid Assault Allegations
President Donald Trump remarked on Wednesday that it will be challenging for Congressional Democrats to find a replacement for former Maine Senator Graham Platner, whose campaign has stumbled significantly.
“It’s tough for them. It’s about whether to believe women or not. A lot of people tell huge lies. He’s cornered. In a corner. But can they really pull it off? Well, he’s going to lose. I think he’s going to lose,” Trump commented to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning from the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.
On Wednesday evening, Platner announced he was suspending his campaign after numerous Democrats and liberals who had initially supported him retracted their backing and urged him to step back from the race.
Calls for Resignation Intensify
The calls for his resignation intensified following a report from Politico that detailed sexual assault allegations against him. According to his ex-girlfriend, Jenny Racicot, Platner allegedly broke into her home and assaulted her in 2021.
A Politico report included another allegation of physical abuse, this time from Lindsay Fifield, a digital strategist for Republican campaigns. President Trump referenced these claims and questioned why they attracted different levels of outrage.
Claims of Inconsistent Treatment
Fifield, in an interview, expressed frustration with how her accusations were portrayed by the New York Times, focusing instead on her Republican connections rather than the allegations themselves. “I’m here alone in this picture and have 11 paragraphs about my work history. What’s this about?” she remarked.
Platner, for his part, denied the allegations, stating that his decision to suspend the campaign wasn’t an acknowledgment of guilt.
Even though he has suspended his campaign, there’s a deadline. According to Maine law, he needs to officially withdraw by July 13 for Democrats to select a different candidate for the ballot.
As the situation develops, Fox News Digital has attempted to reach out to Platner’s team for further comments.
