Trump Considers Ending Capital Gains Tax on Home Sales

In Washington, President Trump mentioned on Tuesday that he is contemplating the removal of the capital gains tax for home sales.

During a meeting in the Oval Office with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Trump shared his views with reporters, stating, “We don’t think there’s any tax on the capital gains of our home.”

His comments came in response to questions from an audiographer, Brian Glenn, who is associated with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Recently, Republican lawmakers from Georgia introduced a bill aiming to eliminate taxes on home sales.

Not long before his press remarks, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell had been dropped off, likely to discuss interest rates.

Trump noted, “It’s causing problems for people who want to buy a home.” He criticized Powell further, implying that high fees may be politically motivated, saying, “Because this guy is Numbskull, people can’t buy a house.”

The president asserted that easing interest rates could potentially unlock the housing market.

Currently, single taxpayers can exclude up to $250,000 in capital gains when they sell a home, a provision that has remained unchanged since 1997. Those filing jointly can exclude up to $500,000.

Rep. Greene expressed her belief that “families who work hard, build equity and sell their homes should not be punished by a large tax bill.” In her statement regarding the bill, she described the capital gains tax on home sales as “an outdated, unfair burden,” particularly given the current surge in housing market values.

While recently Congress passed a significant tax cut package aligned with Trump’s earlier promises, the elimination of the capital gains tax will need to receive Congressional approval.
