Trump Anticipates “Occupation” of Cuba

On Monday, President Trump expressed that he looks forward to the “honor” of “occupying Cuba,” shortly after acknowledging that Cuba’s communist regime is engaged in discussions with the United States.

While speaking from the White House, he avoided confirming whether the U.S. would intervene in Cuba concerning Venezuela or Iran, but asserted that the nation could do “whatever it wants” regarding Cuba.

“I think Cuba is nearing its end,” he remarked during a press briefing in the Oval Office. “I’ve often wondered, when will the U.S. take action?” He added, “I believe we will have the honor of occupying Cuba. That would be a significant honor.”

Trump elaborated on his intentions regarding Cuba, saying, “You can take it, you can release it, or do whatever you want with it.” He characterized Cuba as “a very weakened country right now.”

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed on Friday that his administration is in discussions with the U.S. following Trump’s remarks about a “friendly takeover.” He stated that the meeting aimed to “find solutions through dialogue to the existing bilateral differences.”

Additionally, Trump suspended discounted shipments of Venezuelan oil to Cuba after a recent attack in Caracas led to the downfall of Nicolás Maduro, Cuba’s socialist ally. He also threatened to impose tariffs on nations supplying oil to Cuba, which has led to fuel shortages and widespread blackouts on the island.

In recent days, protesters against communism have taken to the streets of Havana, with many experts and Cuban-American politicians asserting that Cuba’s government has never been in a more vulnerable position.

Trump criticized Cuba as “a failed nation,” stating, “They lack money, oil, and resources. However, they possess good land.” He reflected positively on “the very entrepreneurial people” he has encountered from Cuba and expressed hope about reconnecting with the island.
