President Trump’s Optimism on Russia-Ukraine Talks
WASHINGTON — President Trump expressed optimism regarding discussions about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict shortly after engaging with several European leaders on the matter.
He provided updates on efforts to conclude the war at the onset of the Mexico Border Defense Medal Ceremony in the Oval Office.
“We had a really good conversation with European leaders an hour ago, and much of it revolved around the situation in Ukraine,” the president mentioned. “We’ve had extensive discussions and things appear to be progressing, though, I mean, we’ve said that for a while now, and it’s definitely challenging.”
“I had a lengthy meeting with President Zelenskiy and also engaged with leaders from Germany, Italy, NATO, Finland, France, the UK, Poland, Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands. It was a long and constructive meeting. I really think things are looking optimistic,” he continued, positively referencing recent security protocols between the nations.
President Trump has voiced that the conflict, which he attributes to Biden’s administration, shouldn’t have begun in the first place. He believes that the nearly four-year war is now closer to resolution than it has been in the past. Just three weeks ago, he remarked that his team had achieved “remarkable progress” towards a resolution.
“I think we’re now closer, and they would agree with that. We’ve had several discussions with President Putin, and I truly believe we are nearer than ever to an agreement. We’ll see what we can accomplish,” he stated on Monday.
Trump emphasized the goal of saving lives, mentioning, “We supply equipment to NATO. We aren’t pouring in funds, but our aim is to help save lives.” He reflected on the staggering losses, noting, “Losing 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers, primarily soldiers—and others…from places like Kyiv and other areas in Ukraine—is quite severe.”
He highlighted that the war’s death toll hasn’t been seen since World War II. He also stressed the necessity for both sides to be “aligned.”
“Currently, Russia wishes for this to conclude. However, the complication is that they want it to end yet it doesn’t—similarly for Ukraine. We need to align their interests, and I believe we’re making progress,” he explained.
Since returning to office, Trump has successfully resolved eight wars and conflicts. If the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine cease, it would mark the ninth success. His administration achieved a historic peace agreement in the Middle East, ending conflicts between Israel and Iran, Azerbaijan and Armenia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, Egypt and Ethiopia, Pakistan and India, as well as Cambodia and Thailand.
On Monday, he stated that his administration would “take charge,” overcoming recent setbacks in Cambodia and Thailand relations. Turkish media reported that he also diffused a situation that could have escalated tensions between Serbia and Kosovo.
