Trump threatens to use the Insurrection Act after an ICE agent shoots an undocumented immigrant: 'Stop this injustice'

ICE Operations Continue Amid Rising Tensions

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are still active in Minneapolis and other areas, even with a reported surge in slurs and death threats directed at them from Democratic officials—an increase of about 8,000%. It’s worth noting that around 70% of those arrested in this sanctuary jurisdiction are said to be illegal immigrants who have faced charges or convictions in the U.S.

During an arrest attempt on Wednesday night, federal law enforcement came under significant fire. This wasn’t just from the individuals they were pursuing, but surprisingly, also from two bystanders who seemed eager to interfere with the arrest.

“The riots in Minnesota stem from a failed state leadership that has fostered violence,” a local opinion suggests.

This incident escalated into a defensive shooting, and some radicals seized the opportunity to criticize law enforcement, causing further unrest and attempts to undermine the Justice Department, which was later referred to as a “rebellion.”

Details of the Shooting

According to the Department of Homeland Security, at around 6:50 PM local time, federal agents were trying to apprehend an illegal immigrant from Venezuela. The suspect fled in a vehicle but crashed into a parked car, which led to a foot chase.

One of the involved ICE officers, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commander Gregory Bovino, managed to catch up with the individual in the 600 block of North 24th Street. However, as ICE officers attempted another arrest, the suspect reportedly began resisting violently.

Things took a turn when two individuals from a nearby apartment started attacking the officers with shovels and broomsticks, allegedly aiding in the suspect’s escape.

It was claimed that the Venezuelans also joined in with improvised weapons to assault the already outnumbered officers.

“While one officer was being ambushed, he feared for his life and returned fire to protect himself,” the Department of Homeland Security stated.

Following the altercation, the two attackers and the Venezuelan suspect, who suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, barricaded themselves in an apartment. Eventually, they were forced out and taken into custody alongside the suspect and the injured officer, all of whom were transported to the hospital.

Minneapolis police were later supported on-site by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Enforcement and the FBI. Police Chief Brian O’Hara noted that a broom and a snow shovel were recovered from the scene, indicating that at least one person had assaulted federal officers.

Community Response

Post-shooting, a crowd gathered and began engaging in acts of violence. Reports mention that rioters hurled incendiary devices, ice, rocks, and other projectiles at police, some even looting and vandalizing federal vehicles, as captured on video.

Mayor Jacob Frey wasted no time in criticizing ICE, calling it an invading force that was allegedly rounded up American citizens. “ICE’s actions are indefensible,” he stated.

Frey condemned the protests against ICE yet also noted that extremists were “taking the bait.”

Governor Tim Walz appeared to take a somewhat mixed stance, casting federal authorities in a negative light while also urging the public to remain peaceful. He expressed shared anger, saying, “You’re mad. I am too. You are not helpless, and you are certainly not alone.” He mentioned the community’s growing awareness on how to stand up for those at risk.

The Attorney General’s office seemed to echo these sentiments, as two Minnesota Democratic leaders faced charges for sedition following the unrest.

“ICE functions without incident in countless counties, where agents work to protect us from criminal elements,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. He highlighted that the riots were a direct consequence of the state’s leadership failures, condemning the encouragement of violence against law enforcement as despicable.

Further escalating tensions, former President Donald Trump announced intentions to invoke the Insurrection Act if Minnesota’s officials do not curb the actions of “professional agitators.” He claimed that many presidents had used the 1807 act when necessary to restore order.
