Trump Threatens to Veto Bernie Sanders’ New Action Against Israel

White House Opposes Legislative Moves Against Arms Sales to Israel

The White House is pushing back against independent Senator Bernie Sanders’ attempts to halt the Trump administration’s proposed arms sales to Israel.

A policy statement from the administration reveals that President Donald Trump has rejected two resolutions aimed at preventing these sales. The administration contends that these arms sales will bolster Israel’s capability to confront local threats and align with U.S. national interests.

“The administration is firmly against the approval of SJRes. 34 and SJRes. 41, which seek to block sales of ammunition and small arms to our ally, Israel,” the statement asserts. “Should these resolutions reach the President, his advisors will recommend that he reject them,” the document states.

Senator Sanders, known for his critical stance on Israeli policies, is anticipated to push for a Senate vote on these resolutions. Progressive lawmakers have criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for allegedly causing severe hunger in the Gaza Strip.

“It has long been overdue for Congress to leverage our military aid and weaponry to demand that Israel address these atrocities,” Sanders remarked in a recent statement.

However, Sanders’ initiative confronts significant obstacles in the Senate, where Republican support for Israel remains strong, particularly regarding military actions in Gaza, including a recent attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

This vote could also bring to light divisions among Senate Democrats regarding their stance on Israel.

Recently, Senate Democrats have intensified their criticism of Israel’s actions amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, joined by independent Senator Angus King from Maine, who is advocating for support until the situation improves.

Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan mentioned on a podcast that she will consider actions to block offensive weapon sales to Israel. “It’s definitely something I’ll look into, but I won’t halt sales of necessary defensive supplies such as blankets,” she added.
