Over a million people are expected to visit the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines this summer. In fact, last year saw a record high of 1,182,682 attendees, making it a significant event not just for locals but also for politicians eager to connect with the Heartland audience.
President Donald Trump is anticipated to attend on Thursday, joining the crowds to enjoy the atmosphere and unique food offerings. His remarks are scheduled for 7:30 pm local time.
As always, the fair will present a range of foods, from beloved classics to more eccentric options. Here are a few highlights:
1. Stick Pork Chops
One of the most iconic dishes at the fair is the stick pork chop, which is well-known among attendees. It seems countless politicians, including Trump and Hillary Clinton, have indulged in this fare before.
According to the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA), these chops weigh around 9-11 ounces and are designed with a rib left intact for easy handling. Interestingly, they weren’t an instant hit; when they first appeared in 1999, they didn’t get much love. A seasoned fair volunteer recalled selling only about 6,000 of them that year.
2. Pork Tenderloin Sandwich
The pork tenderloin sandwich stands out as another fan favorite. This dish typically features fried pork nestled between a couple of slices of bread, often appearing larger than the bun itself.
Its crispy exterior is sometimes compared to a Wiener Schnitzel. While the sandwich is a bit of a rarity elsewhere, it’s deeply appreciated throughout the Midwest, especially in Iowa, Nebraska, and Indiana.
3. Pecan Pie on a Stick
If you’re looking for a unique dessert, you have to try the pecan pie on a stick. Crafted with a pie crust filled with homemade pecan mix and a splash of chocolate caramel, it’s then elegantly rolled in more pecans and bacon.
Described as a sweet but slightly salty option, it’s available for $6—definitely a treat worth considering.
4. Fried Avocado Slices
For something on the healthier side, fried avocado slices are among the few vegetarian options offered at the fair. They are simply sliced and deep-fried to a golden brown.
Being lighter than most fried snacks, avocados offer health benefits, such as potentially lowering diabetes and heart disease risks.
5. Berkshire Bacon Balls
Another meat lover’s delight comes in the form of Berkshire bacon balls, available in their bacon boxes. Each meatball is a quarter-pound, filled with cheese, wrapped in bacon, and smoked, lending a rich flavor to this tempting dish.
6. Iowa Twinkie
Last but not least, the Iowa Twinkie—a newcomer on the scene—isn’t sweet despite its name. Stuffed with pulled pork, jalapeño peppers, sweet corn, and cream cheese, it’s then wrapped in bacon and garnished with ranch and chives.
All in all, be prepared for a mix of traditional dishes and some unusual treats at this year’s fair, offering a little something for everyone.
