President Trump announced plans to call Team USA ahead of the final hockey tournament game with Canada, and again invoked his proposal to merge with US neighbors.
“I'll call the US Great American Hockey Team this morning and drive them towards tonight's victory over Canada.” Trump posted to the Society of Truth.
Since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his decision to step down, the president has doubled his desire to buy Canada. Despite the push, Canadian officials claim they will not join the US
Trump is also threatening Canada with a currently pending 25% tariff. Canada, along with Mexico, is one of the largest trading partners in the country. Experts warn that additional taxes on products could hurt American consumers, but both economies could suffer.
Still, Trudeau holds his position by saying Canada will not “retreat” in the face of threats. Trump has previously suggested that merging the two countries would put an end to all tariffs.
The president's comments on Thursday came after the US men's national ice hockey team invited him to the 4 Nations Face Off Championship Game in Boston. But Trump declined the offer and in his post he said he could not attend “sadly” because he spoke in front of the Republican governor of Washington.
“But we're all watching. If Governor Trudeau wants to join us, he's welcome,” Trump nodded at his suggestion again.
Earlier this week, fans of the United States Canada Hocket Games in Montreal booed during the US national anthem, with three fights erupting within the first nine seconds of the game.
It's the first time in decades that a fight has occurred in an international hockey tournament match, but it's also the point of tension between the US and Canada amid the threat of Trump's tariffs and takeover.
“Good luck to everyone. Have a great game tonight. So exciting!” the president added.
