Trump to leave G7 ahead of schedule because of Middle East conflict

President Trump is set to depart for the G7 summit on Monday night amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

According to White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt, “President Trump had a fantastic day at the G7 and even finalized a significant trade agreement with British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer,” a statement that was shared on Social Platform X.

The White House quickly updated Trump’s itinerary after a series of posts that conveyed a concerning message regarding Iran, including urgent calls for residents in Tehran to “evacuate immediately.”

“The US represents many positive aspects, notably that Iran lacks nuclear weapons,” Trump commented in another post.

Recently, Israel and Iran have exchanged attacks, starting Friday when Israeli missiles struck Iran’s nuclear sites, resulting in the deaths of high-ranking military officials.

Questions have arisen about the potential involvement of the US in the conflict, particularly since the Trump administration labeled Israel’s initial strike as a unilateral action. However, the US played a role in preventing a retaliatory strike from Iran last Friday.

Following Israel’s initial attack, Trump suggested there might be a “second chance” if Iran agrees to limit its nuclear ambitions. Yet, his post on Monday night and his decision to cut his stay short in Washington may imply that the situation is on the verge of significant escalation.

Earlier in the day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not dismiss the possibility of targeting Iran’s supreme leader. The Israeli military also reported that they have severely hampered Iran’s air defenses, allowing for greater air dominance and attack freedom.

Trump arrived in Canmore, Canada, late Sunday for the G7 Summit. He engaged with leaders from Canada, Germany, the UK, and the European Commission on Monday. Additional meetings are on the agenda for Tuesday, including one with Ukrainian President Voldymi Zelensky and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, followed by a press conference before his evening departure.
