President Donald Trump is set to participate in a national Bible reading event, where he will read from 2 Chronicles 7. Organizers emphasize that this specific passage has historically been a call to prayer in the U.S. The reading, as part of the “America Reads the Bible” initiative celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Bible in America, will take place in the Oval Office. Approximately 500 individuals will read from the Bible over the course of the week, covering everything from Genesis to Revelation.
Importantly, Trump’s passage was not assigned randomly; it was designated for a “special guest” on Tuesday evening, alongside figures like former HUD Secretary Ben Carson and various congressional members. Bunny Pounds, the founder of Christians Engaged, noted that they felt it essential to have someone significant read this part of the scripture.
During discussions about the readings, Pounds and her bishop recognized the importance of this passage, especially since verse 14 has been pivotal in American prayer life for many years. She recalled that this verse has been referenced during critical moments of national reflection.
Pounds explained that the themes in these verses resonate with current national struggles, stating that they were very intentional in selecting Trump for this reading. It reflects the belief that it’s vital for the president to engage with scripture that has historical weight in American faith.
She also asserted that this demonstrates a broader message about the significance of faith in American life, indicating that it matters not just to individuals but collectively as a nation. The White House echoed similar sentiments in a message commemorating the event, calling attention to the Bible’s deep connection to American identity.
The reading event, which runs from April 19 to April 25, will include contributions from various participants, including prominent figures and everyday Americans, all highlighting the diverse makeup of the nation. Attendees will engage in readings from the King James version intended for livestream and future audiobook releases.
Pounds anticipates that viewers will grasp the significance of the moment during Trump’s reading. She described it as moving to witness the president engage with scripture in such a personal space and expressed confidence that his genuine belief in the message would come through.
“America Reads the Bible” officially commences on Sunday at 9 a.m. ET.
