Trump to sign executive order requiring voter ID: 'NO EXCEPTIONS'

Trump’s Executive Order on Voter ID

President Donald Trump has declared he will sign an executive order mandating voters to show identification in all U.S. elections.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Voter IDs must be part of every vote. There are no exceptions!”

He added, “Except for very sick people and distant troops; I will also remove the mail-in voting options.”

This announcement comes after a similar executive order earlier this year that required proof of citizenship for voter registration and stipulated that all votes must be submitted by Election Day.

However, Trump’s latest executive order might face legal challenges. Earlier this year, Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly of the U.S. District Court in D.C. struck down a previous voter ID requirement he had enforced.

Kollar-Kotelly argued that the president lacks the authority to regulate elections as such powers are assigned to Congress and individual states.

In her ruling, she wrote, “Congress is currently discussing laws that affect many changes that the president aims to order. The statutory delegation of powers to administrative agencies does not allow the president to short-circuit the deliberation process of Congress through executive orders.”

Her comments were related to the proposed Save Act, which aims to ensure voter eligibility. The Save Act passed in the House but is facing hurdles in the Senate due to opposition from Democrats.

Despite these obstacles, a recent Gallup opinion survey shows considerable public support for voter ID. About 83% of those who identified as needing citizen proof favor this requirement, with 84% supporting identification at the polls on Election Day.

Polling reveals that a significant majority across party lines backs voter ID: 67% of Democrats, 84% of Independents, and 98% of Republicans. Similarly, 66% of Democrats, 84% of Independents, and 96% of Republicans support the proof of citizenship requirement.
