Last week, the Department of Education revealed that it had fired almost half of its workforce. Trump repeated his argument last week that he would lift the global rankings of the US school system by removing the department and moving education to the state.

“My dream is to move the Department of Education and move education to the state, so that the state can provide education on behalf of the bureaucrats working in Washington,” Trump said. “If you go back to Iowa and Indiana and all the states that run really well, I think I'll be 30, almost 40. They're as good as Denmark. They're as good as Norway.”

USA Today reported that Secretary of Education Linda McMahon will be instructed by the president to take “all necessary measures to promote the closure of the Department of Education and Education,” following a summary from the White House of Trump's Education Order.

Throughout the first weeks of Trump's second term, his administration made dramatic moves to rebuild the government, including massive layoffs and takeovers.

When asked about “how Elon Musk and Doge deal with federally employed workers,” 60% of recent registered voters' Kinipac University poll respondents said they didn't support it. 36% said they support the way the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is treating federal workers.
