Trump’s Executive Order for IndyCar Races in D.C.
President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order this Friday aimed at hosting America’s 250 IndyCar races on the streets of Washington, D.C. This news was confirmed by Fox News Digital.
Initially reported by NBC News, the race, termed the “America 250 Grand Prix,” is set for the weekend of August 21-23. Typically, IndyCar races take place on Sundays, and so far, nothing else is lined up for that weekend.
According to NBC News, while the order hasn’t been made public yet, it will require the Departments of Interior and Transportation to “coordinate with mayors.” They’ll be tasked with planning a race route that highlights the beauty of Washington, D.C., especially its famous national monuments, as noted in a fact sheet.
It’s also been reported that these departments are expected to “quickly” obtain the necessary permits, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is authorized to use available funds to facilitate the race.
IndyCar owner Roger Penske expressed his gratitude: “President Trump has brought an incredible honor to our sport. We are thankful for his confidence and support as IndyCar prepares to honor our nation with a spectacular racing event.” He added that this will be a memorable occasion celebrating independence and the legacy of motorsports in America.
Last week, FOX Business confirmed that the Department of Transportation was advocating for a race on the National Mall as part of this celebration.
In conjunction with this initiative, Trump released an AI-generated video on Truth Social promoting his campaign. The video depicted fans at the National Mall, alongside footage of drivers racing through D.C.
A spokesperson from the Department of Transportation remarked, “The Grand Prix offers a unique chance to celebrate our nation’s racing heritage, showcase the National Mall, and generate substantial tourism revenue for our capital.” They also emphasized the administration’s commitment to enhancing D.C. through this campaign.
Nonetheless, there are challenges ahead, particularly with advertising being banned on Capitol grounds, a point that raises questions since racing cars are often adorned with ads.
While the exact racing routes are still unclear, the promotional video shared by Trump featured notable landmarks such as the Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial. Interestingly, a UFC event is also slated for the South Lawn on June 14, which falls on Trump’s 80th birthday.
