Former President Trump told the Secret Service that he “believes we need more resources,” a campaign adviser said Tuesday.
“First of all, the president has always been very clear that he values the work and the risk and the personal sacrifice very highly,” Tim Murtaugh told NewsNation's Blake Berman on “The Hill.”
“He has a lot of respect for the Secret Service and is very appreciative of the work they do, and he thinks they're doing a great job keeping him safe,” Murtaugh continued. “He's told the acting director of the Secret Service that he's seen what's happened and he thinks we need more resources.”
President Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt over the weekend, just months after one at a Pennsylvania rally in July. Sunday's attempt happened while Trump was golfing in Florida.
Florida authorities said Sunday that a Secret Service agent saw the barrel of a rifle protruding from a fence while Trump was playing golf at a West Palm Beach golf course. The agent opened fire, causing the man to drop an AK-style rifle with a scope and flee in an SUV, the authorities added.
“This has already happened twice,” Murtaugh told “The Hill.” “This is not a speculation that the Secret Service is not protecting him adequately.”
In a post on Truth Social late Sunday, President Trump thanked police following what appeared to be an assassination attempt.
“Thank you all for your concern and encouragement. It's been a truly interesting day!” Trump said in the post.
“Most importantly, I want to thank the United States Secret Service, Sheriff Rick Bradshaw and the brave and dedicated Patriot Office and everyone in law enforcement for the amazing job they did today at Trump International to keep me, the 45th President of the United States and the Republican candidate in the upcoming Presidential election, safe. The job that was done was truly incredible. I am so proud to be an American!”
Hill contacted the Secret Service.
