The issue of tariffs is one of the longest-running debates in American history. Tariffs generate revenue for the federal government and encourage domestic production in some industries by acting as a protective barrier against foreign competitors.

average price increased According to Douglas A. Irwin's Trade Policy in American Economic History, from 1861 to 1933, average tariffs rose to 50 percent. Since 1934, the rise of an idea called “free trade” has lowered tariffs to an average of about 5%, but Irwin warns: “Average tariffs have increased in 2018-19 as a result of Trump administration policies” on imports from China and on steel imports. ”
