The president, referring to American workers, said, “They watched in agony as foreign leaders stole our work, as foreign con artists plundered our factories and foreign cleaners tore their once beautiful American dreams.”
We had an American dream you didn't hear so much – you did 4 years ago, and you're now, but you know too often over the years, and even in decades, you didn't hear much about our country. And that taxpayer has been torn apart for over 50 years, and that's not happening anymore. That won't happen. After a while, I sign a historic executive order that enacts mutual tariffs on countries around the world. Mutual – that means they do it to us, and we do it to them. It's very simple and can't be simpler than that.
Applause exploded in the rose garden before Trump said it.
“For years, hardworking American citizens have been forced to sit on the sidelines as other countries become rich and powerful, and are a large part of it at our expense, but now it is our turn to thrive.
The chart, posted by Trump's quick response team on the podium, revealed a breakdown of the tariffs.
Tariffs start at a baseline of 10% in all countries, but some received higher based on half the amount they charge to the US.
China's 67% tariff on the US is met with a 34% tariff accordingly, and the EU's 39% tariff is met with a 20% tariff.
Trump added that a 25% tariff on “all foreign-made cars” would come into effect in the middle of the night.
