President Donald Trump has been informed following an incident where Border Patrol agents shot and killed an armed man in Minneapolis, according to a White House source.
In the wake of this event, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has urged the Trump administration to withdraw immigration enforcement officers from the city.
On Saturday, Border Patrol agents fatally shot a man at the intersection of East 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue. The individual has since been identified as a 37-year-old resident of Minneapolis, believed to be a U.S. citizen.
During a press conference, Mayor Frey expressed outrage, mentioning that he had seen footage of multiple undercover operatives attacking a voter. “How many more residents must suffer before this operation stops?” he questioned. “Is political rhetoric really more important than American values? How often do leaders have to plead with you, Donald Trump, to end this operation? It’s not making our cities safer.”
Frey remarked that residents were being driven to violence due to ongoing tensions and criticized the government for failing to consider whether the current approach promotes peace and security. “If the aim is to ensure safety, this is doing the exact opposite,” he said.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that the suspect was armed with a gun and two magazines. Officials attempted to disarm him, but he allegedly resisted forcefully.
DHS stated that an officer, fearing for his safety and that of his colleagues, fired in self-defense. Medical personnel on the scene provided aid, but the suspect was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Evidence suggested he intended to cause significant harm to law enforcement personnel.
Following the shooting, governors from several Democratic-led states quickly called for the Trump administration to pull immigration officers from the area. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker condemned the situation, stating, “We must end President Trump’s operations. Defund ICE. Stop the occupation and prevent further violence.”
In a response post, Pritzker called on governors from both parties to unite against what he described as ongoing injustices. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz echoed these sentiments, criticizing immigration officers as “untrained” and calling for their immediate removal.
Meanwhile, New York Governor Kathy Hochul added her voice, denouncing the incident as a sign of a federal operation that’s spiraled out of control. “Americans are fed up with illegal actions masked as a crackdown,” she stated, emphasizing Trump’s responsibility to halt such operations.
This situation remains fluid, with further updates expected.
