Late Thursday, President Trump once again criticized Obamacare, urging Democrats to take action with rising premiums under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) looming on the horizon due to a federal funding stalemate.
“As I’ve pointed out numerous times, Obamacare is a disaster! Rates are skyrocketing because of incredibly high health care costs!!! Democrats, do something!!!,” he expressed in a letter.
As the shutdown nears a month, Senate Democrats are holding firm, demanding that Republican lawmakers agree to extend ACA subsidies, which are set to end this year.
Analysis indicates that without these subsidies, monthly premiums could soar to $1,380 for affected individuals.
Republican lawmakers have tried to dismantle Obamacare since its inception in 2010, with vigorous efforts as recent as 2017. Now, they’re pushing for an agreement on extending the subsidies, which they believe need to be tied to “reforms.”
“The impending expiration of Obamacare subsidies poses a serious issue,” noted House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) during a press briefing. “Objectively speaking, we are subsidizing ineffective policy. We are investing too heavily in a broken system and require real reform.”
Two weeks ago, Senate Majority Leader John Thune mentioned that a vote to extend ACA subsidies could happen if Senate Democrats consented to fund the government. However, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (R-N.Y.) claimed that they are “not to be trusted with wings and prayers.”
“There needs to be a solid plan for the Republican Party to tackle the health care crisis, as well as issues of living costs and affordability,” he stated during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on October 16. “The cuts to Medicaid under Republican policies have been unprecedented, resulting in the closure of hospitals, nursing homes, and community health centers nationwide.”
