On Wednesday, President Trump reiterated his call to eliminate the national debt ceiling, finding unexpected agreement with Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts.
“It’s kind of amazing to finally say this, but I’m on the same page as Senator Elizabeth Warren regarding something important: we need to get rid of the debt ceiling to avoid economic disasters. Both Republicans and Democrats can make this happen,” Trump posted on a social media platform.
He amplified Warren’s message from another platform, where she expressed her view that the debt limit should be “abolished” and advocated for a bipartisan effort to permanently eliminate it.
Warren had referenced Trump’s comments, noting that progressive senators have long been in favor of repealing the debt ceiling. Trump acknowledged that he has always shared this perspective but admitted he hadn’t talked to her directly about it.
“She wants to see it ended so we won’t have to vote on it every few years, as it can be really damaging for our nation,” Trump stated during a press briefing alongside Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent has urged Congress to raise the debt ceiling to avoid a potential default by mid-July, following a temporary suspension of the limits in 2023 under former President Biden and GOP leaders, which was intended to alleviate the threat of national default until early 2025.
Historically, Trump and Warren have clashed, with Trump frequently mocking her in speeches, referring to her as “Pocahontas.” During his first joint address to Congress in March, he used the nickname, prompting applause from her side of the chamber.
