Former President Donald Trump has urged voters in Virginia to choose “Republican” in the upcoming gubernatorial election, highlighting that the GOP candidate, current Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears, is “excellent.”
While aboard Air Force One heading back to Washington, D.C., Trump was asked by reporters if he planned to back Earl Sears as she faces off against Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger.
“Mr. President, you haven’t talked much about the Virginia gubernatorial election coming up in a few weeks. Will you support the lieutenant governor?” a reporter inquired.
“I think the Republican candidate is very strong. She really should win because, let’s be honest, the Democratic candidate is just a disaster,” Trump responded, mentioning that he was “not really involved” in the race.
He reiterated, “I think the Republican candidate is great, but I think the Democratic candidate is pretty bad.”
Trump remarked that during a recent debate he saw between Spanberger and Earl Sears, Spanberger “couldn’t handle the simplest questions.”
“It’s all about energy in that race, just like in New Jersey. The Democrats will push energy costs way up. If Republicans win, your energy prices could drop significantly—by 70, maybe even 80 percent. So, vote Republican, everyone,” he added.
When it came to the Virginia election, Trump was also questioned about comments made by Jay Jones, the Democratic candidate for Virginia attorney general, during a debate against current Attorney General Jason Miyares. Jones had said, “I can’t wait to see Donald Trump in court and protect Virginia.”
In response to Jones’ remarks, Trump called him a “third-rate intellect.” He went on to say, “I can’t imagine anyone wanting to vote for Jay Jones.”
In related information, a message from Jones that emerged involved him discussing a fictional scenario involving violence against other politicians, which raised eyebrows. He even talked about the suffering of others in a concerning manner. This has created some controversy around Jones’ candidacy.
