Trump vows to ‘bring peace’ after ‘very good’ call with Zelensky

Former President Trump vowed to “bring peace” after speaking by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday.

“President Zelensky of Ukraine and I had a very good phone call today. He congratulated me on the success of the Republican National Convention and on my becoming the Republican nominee for President of the United States.” Trump posted Visit his Truth Social site.

Trump said Zelenskiy had condemned the “heinous” assassination attempt on the former president last Saturday and spoke about Americans coming together.

“I thank President Zelenskyy for reaching out to me. As the next President of the United States, I intend to bring peace to the world and end a war that has taken so many lives and destroyed countless innocent families,” Trump wrote. “Working together, the two sides can negotiate an agreement that ends the violence and paves the way for prosperity.”

Trump officially became the Republican nominee for president in 2024 on Thursday, just days after a gunman opened fire at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Zelensky made similar remarks to Trump. In a post He posted on social media platform X, condemning the “shocking assassination attempt” and wishing President Trump “strength and absolute safety in the future.”

“I recognize that bipartisan, bicameral American support is essential to safeguarding our country’s freedom and independence,” Zelensky said. “Ukraine will always be grateful for the U.S.’s assistance in strengthening our capacity to resist Russian terrorism.”

Zelensky said he had agreed to meet with Trump “privately to discuss how to ensure a just, truly lasting peace.”

The call marked a turning point for Trump and Zelensky. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 after Trump left office.

The former president has repeatedly said that if re-elected, he would resolve the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours.

Zelenskiy has previously disputed Trump’s rhetoric and extended multiple invitations to visit war-torn Ukraine.
