Trump vows to ‘save vaping’ despite previous support for ban

Former President Donald Trump said he would “save e-cigarettes” in a Truth Social Friday post, despite banning flavored e-cigarette products during his first term.

“I will save e-cigarettes again!” Trump said post.

His post appears to be a reversal of actions he took while in office, after the Trump administration announced a limited ban on mint- and fruit-flavored cartridges in 2020 but did not ban all types of vaping products.

President Trump faced criticism in 2019 when he announced a ban on all flavored e-cigarette products.

In December 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) called for a ban on flavored e-cigarette products in a press release. The WHO said in the press release that such a ban was “necessary to prevent the widespread use of e-cigarettes and counter nicotine addiction.”

In June, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an agency task force to crack down on the distribution of illegal e-cigarettes. Later that month, the FDA approved the first non-tobacco flavored e-cigarettes for adult smokers, signaling that the agency believes some flavors in e-cigarette products can reduce the effects of smoking traditional cigarettes.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court announced it would hear a case involving the FDA's refusal to sell flavored tobacco e-cigarette products to two companies.
