Trump warns of tariffs on European countries concerning the Greenland acquisition agreement

Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Greenland Purchase

President Donald Trump has stated that the U.S. will impose a 10% tariff on certain European nations unless Denmark commits to a complete purchase of Greenland. He emphasized that global security and America’s national defense are at stake.

In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump elaborated on his viewpoint, asserting that for many years, the U.S. has essentially subsidized Denmark and other EU countries by refraining from imposing tariffs. He referred to this as providing “maximum protection.”

In his words, “For many years, we have subsidized Denmark, all the countries of the European Union, and other countries by not charging them tariffs or any other form of remuneration.”

Special Envoy to Greenland Announced

Trump mentioned that it was time for Denmark to reciprocate. “World peace is at stake!” he declared. He pointed out that both China and Russia are interested in Greenland, hinting that Denmark might be powerless in this situation. “They currently have two dog sleds for protection,” he wrote, humorously adding that only the U.S. can successfully navigate these geopolitical waters.

He maintained that no one should threaten this “sacred land,” stressing that it is crucial for the national security of both the U.S. and the world. Trump also noted alarming activity from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, the U.K., and others traveling to Greenland for unspecified reasons, which he deemed a potential threat to global safety.

Plans to Increase Tariffs

According to Trump, European countries mentioned will face a 10% tariff on all goods sent to the U.S., which will rise to 25% by June 1, 2026, unless a purchase of Greenland is finalized. “This tariff should be paid until a full and complete purchase agreement for Greenland is reached,” he said.

Trump has been focusing on Greenland, a pivotal location in the Arctic, as it becomes increasingly important due to melting ice revealing new shipping routes and access to natural resources. He highlighted that Greenland is a semi-autonomous Danish territory with significant U.S. military bases.

In his comments, Trump pointed out that the U.S. has expressed interest in purchasing Greenland for over 150 years, yet Denmark has consistently declined. He connected this issue to modern defense systems and emphasized the necessity of including Greenland for the optimal operation of related security programs.

Expressing readiness to negotiate immediately with Denmark and the involved countries, Trump concluded, “Thank you for your consideration in this matter!” His remarks arrive as he awaits a Supreme Court ruling on the legality of previous tariffs imposed by his administration.
