Trump warns opponent about Massie, labels him 'Rand Paul Junior'

Former President Donald Trump has criticized Kentucky House member Thomas Massey for his opposition to what Trump calls the “big beautiful bill.” Speaking to Air Force reporters, Trump suggested that Massey’s political future is in jeopardy, indicating he may face a significant challenger in the upcoming primaries.

“He’s going to have a strong opponent,” Trump remarked, noting that polls indicate anyone he backs against Massey has a considerable lead. “I don’t believe he’s serving the interests of our country well. He’s constantly saying no,” Trump added, likening him to Senator Rand Paul in his tendencies to oppose legislation. “Kentucky’s Thomas Massey isn’t being constructive at all. I just don’t think he’s particularly smart,” Trump expressed.

Trump is advocating for Congress to pass his proposed “big and beautiful bills” and stressed that lawmakers won’t act until they are on vacation. This statement came after he returned from a visit to a new illegal immigration detention center in Florida, where he also discussed the legislation.

During his administration, Trump celebrated various legislative achievements, particularly regarding the Budget Settlement Bill. Notably, while a majority of Republicans backed the bill, a small faction—including Massey—refused to support it. Massey had previously expressed concerns about the bill leading to an unsustainable increase in federal debt.

Interestingly, Elon Musk echoed Massey’s sentiment, calling the legislation a “debt bomb” and a “missed opportunity” for conservatives. As the bill was debated, Musk aligned himself with Massey and others who have criticized the approach taken by certain lawmakers.

Massey himself stated that while he had promised Americans tax cuts and budget discipline, passing the bill would lead to significant short-term deficits, despite assurances of future fiscal responsibility. He highlighted the pitfalls that could arise from such legislation.

Musk recently vowed to aid Massey’s reelection campaign and criticized lawmakers who promised to cut spending but continued to vote for increasing the national debt. His comments included a metaphorical illustration of Pinocchio, suggesting politicians aren’t being truthful with their commitments.

Regarding Massey’s situation, Trump stated that he didn’t dwell on him when asked if he was setting a precedent for lawmakers who opposed his initiatives. “If you’re against someone, you’re against them,” he remarked, emphasizing that voters tend to trust his judgment and decision-making skills.

Massey’s office has not yet provided any response to Trump’s statements.
