The SEC game between Alabama and Georgia will proceed without President Donald Trump, who had planned to attend. He announced on Friday that he would not be going due to severe weather warnings associated with Hurricane Isaias.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the importance of focusing on the threat from the hurricane. He wrote, “With a huge Hurricane/Storm approaching, it’s crucial for our brave First Responders and Law Enforcement, as well as others, to concentrate on this situation, rather than being distracted by the presence or safety of the President of the United States—ME!”
Trump expressed his intention to catch games for both teams later this season, mentioning, “I will miss that potentially unbelievable Game, Alabama vs. Georgia, but hopefully, the Game will go on despite the weather! I plan to visit both of those Teams at a later date.”
Hurricane Isaias is predicted to make landfall along the Gulf Coast late Friday night, posing a significant threat to the Southeast. Tuscaloosa is near its anticipated path.
In light of the weather conditions, precautions have already been implemented for the game. For instance, ESPN’s “College GameDay” programming will move inside to Alabama’s basketball arena.
Regardless of the hurricane’s strength, which is expected to escalate to a Category 3 storm upon reaching the coast, as of Friday evening, the game is still on. The university has stated that they are actively monitoring weather developments.
“Alabama athletics continues to closely monitor the weather forecast ahead of Saturday’s football game, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all involved,” the university remarked in a statement. They added, “We remain in close communication with the National Weather Service, the Southeastern Conference office, and the University of Georgia as we observe the unfolding conditions.”
