National Political Correspondent Maggie Haberman has scathed why he believes President Trump is defending national security adviser Mike Waltz for signal group chat violations.
“Trump is very clear that he doesn't want to fire someone because, according to a lot of people I've spoken about, he sees it as succumbing to the media,” Haberman said in CNN's appearance on Thursday.Kaitlan Collins Source. ”
“People around him look at it weakly,” a correspondent for the New York Times added. “And I'll hear that for a while. Whether this is sustainable for them is another story.”
Waltz has confirmed that Chief Jeffrey Goldberg's Atlantic editor will be added to a message thread being debated among senior Trump administration officials, including Waltz, Vice President Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense and National Intelligence Director Tarsi Gabbard.
Goldberg made its full message public on Wednesday.
“I didn't see this loser in the group. It looked like someone else,” Waltz told Fox News' Laura Ingraham earlier this week. “Right now, whether he did that on purpose or if it happened in another technical sense is something we are trying to understand.”
Despite concerns from former defense officials, Trump has maintained full confidence in the waltz, reiterating that others in the administration appear to have ruled out the incident as “mistakes.”
“Michael Waltz learned the lesson and he's a good guy,” Trump told NBC, adding that the security breaches were “the only glitch in two months and it turned out not serious.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) also argues that Waltz and Hegstes, who took the heat away over the violation, should not be punished.
As the White House cried out to contain criticism, Waltz is fully pressing his duty after the incident.
The national security adviser is scheduled to accompany Vance and his wife Usha on a trip to Greenland on Friday.
