Wallace pointed out that the current administration lacks what she referred to as “normal Republicans.” She used the example of Stephen Miller, suggesting his influence has led to a more aggressive atmosphere, particularly regarding actions against protests in Los Angeles.
Colbert inquired about the involvement of the National Guard and Marines in Los Angeles amid the unrest. He noted, “We’ve seen Trump gain the strength of his president over the past five months.” Wallace responded, acknowledging the difference in Trump’s approach recently, then hesitated momentarily, asking if she could use stronger language. She emphasized that this current phase feels distinctly different, although some figures, like Mark Mirei, seem to have restrained him.
A recent deployment saw 700 US Marines called up to Los Angeles, coinciding with Trump dispatching the National Guard to address tensions stemming from anti-immigration riots.
In light of criticism towards Trump’s actions, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson defended the president’s decisions. She attributed the chaos to Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom and stated that Trump had to take necessary steps to safeguard law enforcement officials.
Colbert also asked Wallace whether the situation posed a risk of authoritarianism within the Democratic framework. She reflected on the unpredictability of politics, mentioning that a single leader could shift the landscape significantly. But she made it clear she doesn’t view Democrats as inherently corrupt, albeit criticizing Trump’s authoritarian tendencies.
Wallace previously gained attention for her comments regarding a 13-year-old cancer survivor whom Trump honored by naming him an honorary Secret Service agent. She expressed hope that the boy would have a fulfilling life, wishing he could become a police officer but with a desire that he wouldn’t have to face the dangers associated with political turmoil, mentioning the grim reality of potential casualties among those serving in such roles.
