A recent poll by the Pew Research Center shows that just 38% of respondents approve of President Trump’s job performance, down from 41% two months ago.
This decline in approval seems connected to dissatisfaction with his tariff policies and the recently signed legislation often referred to as the “big beautiful bill.” This bill aims to expand tax cuts from Trump’s first term while also cutting Medicaid.
Among the 3,554 adults surveyed, 61% disapprove of Trump’s customs policy, especially as prices for everyday goods continue to rise. The reaction to the Tax and Expense Act has also been mixed, with 46% disapproving, 32% approving, and about 23% unsure.
However, voters still show some confidence in Trump regarding key issues. For instance, 47% expressed being “a little confident” in his abilities to negotiate trade deals, while 46% feel similarly about his handling of immigration.
Another challenge for Trump lies in managing files related to the controversial investor Jeffrey Epstein. Around 70% of those surveyed felt the government’s handling of the situation was inadequate. Among Republicans, 53% approved of the handling of the Epstein Files, whereas overall, 63% expressed distrust in what the federal government is saying regarding the matter.
Further questions regarding Trump’s overall performance reveal that 53% believe he is making the federal government worse, while only 27% see improvements. Although Democrats overwhelmingly disapprove of Trump, it’s noted that Republicans have also shown a decline in satisfaction.
Currently, 55% of Republicans feel Trump is improving the government, down from a belief among 76% that he would do so upon taking office. Conversely, a significant 78% of Democrats felt things worsened under Trump, and this number has risen to 87% now.
Since taking office, Trump’s overall approval rating has dropped by 9%, according to Pew’s figures. While 95% of Trump voters approved of his performance in February, that number has fallen to 85%. Among non-voters, he has seen a 13% drop in support.
