President Donald Trump has stated he’s unlikely to deploy federal law enforcement to Democratic cities dealing with ongoing protests. He emphasized that assistance would only be given if local authorities make a polite request for help.
In a recent announcement, Trump instructed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to avoid sending federal agents into states identified as far-left unless asked for intervention. He conveyed this message in a written statement, noting, “I have directed Secretary Noem not to participate in protests or riots in cities managed by Democratic leaders, unless we are approached for assistance.” This was mentioned in a post he shared over the weekend.
Moreover, he asserted that the federal government would guarantee robust protection for any federal buildings facing aggression from what he referred to as “highly paid lunatics, agitators, and insurrectionists.” Trump mentioned that he has instructed ICE and the Border Patrol to take decisive action regarding the safeguarding of federal properties, warning that anyone attacking officers or property would face formidable repercussions.
While it’s unclear if his statement concerning “equal or greater result” involves criminal charges, Trump indicated that it serves to remind local governments of their duty to protect both state and federal property. He outlined a proposed “Ask Us” policy permitting local governments overwhelmed by unrest to seek federal help.
He expressed that if a local government reaches out, federal officers would respond quickly and systematically. Trump referred to previous instances, such as the Los Angeles riots, where federal support was deemed vital by local authorities.
In his statements, he underscored that local officials should be courteous when asking for federal assistance, adding, “Please remember to use the word ‘please’.” He reiterated that federal agencies, including ICE and the military if necessary, would be tough in their role to protect federal assets, declaring that no damage to courthouses or federal buildings would be tolerated. His stance is clear: he believes in upholding law and order, expressing that this is what Americans desire.
