Crime Statistics and Federal Initiatives in U.S. Cities
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy released crime statistics on Monday while President Donald Trump aims to enhance safety in American cities.
In a social media update, Bondy shared Trump’s message about ongoing efforts to restore security: “We’re once again making America safe.” In Washington, D.C., law enforcement arrested 3,837 individuals and confiscated 361 illegal firearms. Similarly, Memphis saw 273 arrests and a seizure of 73 illegal guns in just under a week.
Even though Trump’s administration planned a crackdown on crime in the nation’s capital, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) rejected claims that the city faced severe crime issues. Interestingly, the crime rate declined after the president’s administration took steps to federalize the police department, as reported in August.
In September, another memorandum facilitated the creation of a “Memphis Safe Task Force,” mirroring the one established in D.C. Trump emphasized the urgency of addressing crime not just in Memphis but in various cities, stating they would tackle the issues systematically.
Breitbart News highlighted Memphis’s alarming statistics, noting it ranked highest in violent crime for 2024, along with having the third highest murder rate and the highest property crime rate. A related memorandum indicated that this task force will comprise representatives from multiple federal agencies, including the Treasury and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and aims to apply strategies from the D.C. initiative to curb both violent and non-violent crimes in Memphis.
Additionally, Defense Secretary Pete Hegses indicated that they intend to deploy units from the Tennessee State Guard and coordinate with governors of other states to mobilize National Guards in support of this initiative.
Footage showed Memphis residents welcoming the National Guard with American flags, with one sign reading, “Memphis great again.” One attendee remarked, “If the city council put in the effort against crime that Donald Trump does by bringing in federal resources, we wouldn’t even need the National Guard here.”
Some Memphis business owners expressed optimism about these new federal resources helping local law enforcement. One mentioned, “It costs us more when people run into stores and steal,” highlighting the struggles they face.
In other news, it was noted that despite the ongoing issues in Chicago, which some described as a “war zone,” Democrats are reportedly advocating for the Trump administration to focus on these troubling statistics. Over the past decade, more than 32,000 people have been shot in Chicago alone.
