Trump's disapproval reaches record high of 59% for a second term, according to a poll.

According to a recent national poll, opinions among voters about the U.S. involvement in global affairs are quite mixed, especially concerning military action in Iran, which appears to be largely influenced by political affiliation.

Currently, 42% of those surveyed support U.S. military action against Iran, whereas 58% are opposed, including nearly 40% who strongly object to it. The divide along party lines is very clear: 77% of Republicans back the efforts, contrasted with only 12% of Democrats and 28% of independents. Notably, support among Republicans varies significantly, as 90% of those aligned with MAGA support the action, compared to 52% of non-MAGA Republicans.

Gender differences in opinion are less pronounced; 38% of women support the action, while 45% of men do. There’s also a hesitance among voters regarding long-term safety, with a higher percentage believing that U.S. actions could make the situation more dangerous (44%) rather than safer (33%). About a quarter think the military actions will have little effect.

In terms of foreign policy perspectives, half of the respondents (50%) believe the U.S. should take a more active role on the global stage, while 48% prefer a more reactive stance. Republicans tend to favor more involvement (72%), while Democrats lean toward less (64%). Support is strongest among MAGA followers (80%) and veterans (70%).

There’s a general consensus about the key U.S. objectives in Iran, including reducing terrorism support (70%), halting the nuclear weapons program (69%), and protecting regional oil supplies (66%). A smaller group (53%) prioritize achieving a change in government in Iran.

President Trump’s handling of the situation has disapproval ratings of 64%, increasing from 57% in January. His overall approval stands at 41% against 59% disapproval. For context, former President Obama’s approval ratings at a similar point in his second term were slightly better. Trump’s disapproval rate is the highest of both his terms, with nearly half expressing strong disapproval. A year ago, his ratings were much closer.

Trump’s approval among Republicans has dropped from 92% a year ago to 84%, marking a record low for his second term. Disapproval is at a record high of 16% among Republicans, largely due to decreased support within the non-MAGA faction. Conversely, MAGA Republicans’ support has risen slightly compared to last year.

Only 25% of independents approve of his performance, with 75% disapproving. Most voters rate the military’s efforts in the Iran conflict positively (58%), though 41% rated it as only fair or poor. When asked about the situation in Iran, just under half (47%) believe things are improving, while 52% do not. Only 19% feel it’s going very well.

Democrats largely view the situation negatively (79%), while Republicans report much more positivity (81%) regarding the conflict. Daron Shaw, a Republican pollster, noted that foreign policy opinions tend to shift depending on perceptions of political leaders, suggesting partisans may be interpreting the situation in Iran through their political biases.

As the conflict stretches into its fourth week, expectations of a swift conclusion are low. Only 13% believe it will end soon, while 37% anticipate it lasting several months, and 15% foresee it taking a year or more. Republicans seem to hope for a quick resolution, while Democrats expect a longer duration.

Looking at the goals of the military operation, more than half rate the U.S. efforts positively for diminishing Iran’s leadership (55%), reducing nuclear capabilities (53%), and limiting U.S. military casualties (50%). However, most voters were less favorable about specific objectives like minimizing civilian casualties (55%) and securing support from major powers (61%).

Veterans rate their approval considerably higher than the general voter population. They are more likely to support the actions taken in Iran (61%), believe they are progressing well (67%), and think they will enhance national security (45%). Veterans also approve of the president’s performance overall (55%) and specifically regarding Iran (53%).

Voters, by a significant margin, feel the White House is focusing more on international issues than on American national security. Concerns about Iran’s potential nuclear capabilities have increased to 66%, yet many voters express greater anxiety about domestic issues like political division (80%) and inflation (86%).
