The DOJ said Monday that six confirmed TDA members were charged as part of their first modest indictment. The second legal charges charged 19 former TDA members who formed the “anti-tren” that formed the Sprinter faction, and two individuals called “associates” of the derived group.
“Of the 27 defendants, 21 have federal custody, including 16 people who have already acquired federal criminal, immigrant or state custody, as well as five people who were arrested last night and today, in New York and other jurisdictions,” the DOJ said.
The individual was charged with “conspiracy, sex trafficking conspiracy, drug trafficking conspiracy, robbery and firearm crimes.”
Attorney General Pam Bondy said the indictment and arrests would “destroy the TDA’s infrastructure as we work to completely dismantle and cleanse this organization from our country.”
“As doubtful, Tren de Aragua is more than just a street gang. It’s a highly structured terrorist organization that has destroyed American families with brutal violence, engaged in human trafficking and spread deadly drugs through the community,” Bondy said.
Mathew Podolski, a US lawyer for the Southern District of New York, explained that the individual was charged on a long list of crimes that included murder and horror.
“Today’s indictment makes clear that the office will work tirelessly to keep residents safe in compliance with New York City laws and to hold those who commit violence on our streets accountable,” Podolski said.
New York City Police Chief Jessica Tish called the TDA “one of the most dangerous gangs in the country.”
“This isn’t just street crime, it’s an organized assault and shows that the gang respects New Yorkers’ safety to zero,” Tish said. “As allegedly in the indictment, these defendants wreaked havoc in our community, trafficking women for sexual exploitation, flooding our city with drugs, and committing violent crimes with illegal guns.”
