National Guard Troops in Washington, DC Amid Crime Crackdown
On Tuesday, National Guard troops were spotted in Washington, DC, as President Donald Trump intensified his efforts to combat crime in the area.
Mayor Muriel Bowser of DC held a meeting with federal officials to discuss strategies and coordination regarding federal law enforcement. “I’m focusing on how to make the most of this federal surge and the additional executive support we have,” Bowser told reporters. She emphasized the importance of leveraging the resources available from federal law enforcement and the National Guard.
Earlier that day, National Guard troops left the DC Armory, eliciting interest from pedestrians who photographed military vehicles in the streets. It’s still unclear how many troops were deployed or their specific roles.
Fox News Digital reached out to both the White House and local officials for further information.
The deployment of federal law enforcement aligns with Trump’s strategy to address crime in the city. Under the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, Trump can take control of Metropolitan Police for up to 30 days, a move he initiated on Monday.
The first day of the crackdown resulted in 23 arrests, including individuals suspected of serious offenses like murder and gun crimes. White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt mentioned that several of those arrested faced charges ranging from murder to weapons violations. Additionally, six illegal firearms were confiscated during these operations.
“These are just examples. We’re just starting out. Our federal partners joined the local police and arrested a total of 23,” FBI Director Kash Patel posted on social media.
In response to the situation, Bowser commented on the constraints her administration faced, indicating a lack of options in the matter.
