Proposed Arc de Triomphe in Washington, D.C.

The Chairman of the American Board of Fine Arts, Rodney Mims Cook Jr., has shared insight into President Trump’s plan for a 166-foot-tall Arc de Triomphe in Washington, D.C. He compares it to the iconic arch in Paris and talks about earlier discussions regarding several arches in the city. Cook also mentions his previous experiences with similar projects and outlines the timeline for these monuments.

In a broader context, President Trump’s initiatives aimed at revitalizing Washington, D.C., are receiving unexpected praise even from some Democrats, especially as the city gears up for its 500th anniversary. Recent renovations have brought back life to neglected landmarks, with one notable change being the reopening of the fountains at Meridian Hill Park. Carter Christensen, a communications strategist, expressed excitement over the restorations in a recent social media post.

As Washington prepares to celebrate the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary, construction efforts have intensified. This includes initiatives to enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal while tackling rising crime rates.

Following the reopening of the fountains, some Democrats have voiced their approval of the administration’s efforts. Tre Easton from the liberal think tank Searchlight Institute referred to the maintenance as the best achievement of the administration, emphasizing how the reopening of the 13-basin fountain, among the longest in North America, has transformed the park. Previously closed for renovations since 2020, the fountain just recently resumed operation.

Moreover, a new fountain was lit up at Lafayette Park for the first time, adding to the city’s vibrancy. Another Democratic strategist affirmed, “All the fountains in the nation’s capital should work,” showing a level of surprise and happiness about the restorations.

Nine fountains have gone through repairs, with plans for additional upgrades to several others, according to the National Park Service. White House Press Secretary Taylor Rogers noted that these renovations are so positively viewed that even detractors of the administration are acknowledging the efforts.

Rogers also stated that the capital will be exceedingly impressive as the nation celebrates its 250th birthday, thanks to Trump’s initiatives.

In a related note, Trump has proposed a $10 billion Presidential Capital Management Program in his 2027 budget to facilitate ongoing construction projects in the D.C. area. He is pursuing various ambitious changes, including renovations to the White House and plans for the Arc de Triomphe, although these have drawn some skepticism from Democrats, who label them as exercises in presidential vanity.
