Trump’s Executive Order on Birthright Citizenship Seen as a Failure

During Thursday’s episode of CNN’s “Arena,” Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) referred to President Donald Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship as a “loser.”

Host Casey Hunt asked, “To begin with, what the Supreme Court has deliberated today indicates a willingness to potentially limit district court judges’ power to issue national injunctions. Do you think that could be valid?”

Raskin responded, “Not at all. In the instance of birthright citizenship, it implies that every family in America affected would have to go to court to file a lawsuit. This is quite inefficient and really quite chaotic. Those who face discrimination are forced to go through their local courts.”

He continued, “Certainly, some judicial figures are attempting to sidestep the core issues in this case relating to citizenship. However, that stance is definitely unfavorable for the Trump administration. There have been four district court rulings against Trump, including two made by Republican appointees. For years, it has starkly contradicted the first sentence of the 14th Amendment, which states that all individuals born or naturalized in the United States are citizens, provided they are under its jurisdiction.”
