Trump's Fed Chair Choice Provokes Elizabeth Warren Directly During Hearing

Warsh’s Confirmation Hearing with Warren

During his confirmation hearing on Tuesday, Kevin Warsh, nominated by President Trump for the Federal Reserve, had a notable exchange with Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts. The hearing centered around Warsh’s potential role in replacing Jerome Powell, whose term concludes on May 15.

Warren pressed Warsh to pinpoint a specific aspect of Trump’s policies that he disagreed with. This prompted a biting, sarcastic retort from Warsh. “There’s only one thing I don’t agree with with Donald Trump,” she challenged.

Warsh responded, “Well, Senator, I actually have a disagreement with the president. I think he was saying this morning that he thought I was out of the lead role. If I were the lead character, I think I might show up here much older and with gray hair and some sort of cigar.”

Warren, not backing down, said, “So adorable. But you know, we need an independent Fed chair. That’s the only way to maintain the Fed’s independence. If you can’t answer these questions, you don’t have the courage, you don’t have the independence.”

Throughout the hearing, Warsh reiterated the significance of the Federal Reserve’s autonomy. He declared he would not act as Trump’s “human sock puppet” and maintain an independent stance, distancing himself from the pressure to change interest rates, which has been a topic of contention in Trump’s second term.

Adding to the complications surrounding Warsh’s nomination, a criminal investigation into Powell was initiated by the District of Columbia prosecutor’s office regarding the escalating costs of renovations at the Federal Reserve headquarters, which had outstripped original estimates of $2.5 billion. Furthermore, Republican Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina is poised to impede Warsh’s confirmation until the Department of Justice drops the investigation against Powell.
