Trump’s Immigration Positions Are ‘Out of Step’ with Most Americans

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) said Tuesday on MSNBC's “Morning Joe” that President-elect Donald Trump's immigration policies are “out of sync” with what “most Americans” want. insisted.

Co-host Willie Geist said, “Let's finally start with birthright citizenship. President-elect Trump has said he will revoke citizenship on the day he takes office. What's your reaction?

“I think the new ideas and weekend proclamations that President Trump is putting forth are not only unconstitutional, they are completely un-American and shameful,” Garcia said. I am an immigrant myself. I had been to this country before, but it was not recorded. It's really, really sad to see this idea that we're not contributing to our country. Frankly, most of his ideas are not in line with what most Americans want. He claims he's going to separate families, but who's doing the work? ”

“Police officers have a job to do,” he continued. “There's a national shortage of police officers. They don't want to spend their time separating families. So whether it's birthright, whether it's mass deportation, family separation. We have to oppose this with principle, no matter what. Not only is this bad for the economy, it's actually not American at all, and frankly, the Democrats have no choice but to oppose this policy. I'm going to strongly oppose the step.
