Trump's Legacy Depends on Achieving Justice for Russiagate

President Trump’s journey toward the presidency, his brand persona, and his mission to uphold the nation are at a critical juncture, one that could elevate him to iconic status in American history.

Yet, whether his legacy will be celebrated alongside the greats of Mount Rushmore—like Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt—remains uncertain. In our divided society, he certainly wouldn’t find himself in the center.

As one of Trump’s earliest national security advisers, I witnessed how the previous administration was undermined by a series of investigations over the Russiagate allegations from 2017 to 2019, costing the nation dearly in legal fees. The president’s first term felt almost snatched away amidst this turmoil.

Legacy media has, perhaps unfairly, fueled perceptions of a stealth coup—complete with narratives spun by deep state insiders and misleading reports. Some once-esteemed media outlets that thrived on these stories even won Pulitzer Prizes.

Curiously, this extensive narrative involved numerous players, including both the Obama and Trump administrations, entrenched federal officials, the Clinton campaign, various congressional members, and media outlets that seemed complicit, along with celebrity figures and some internet influencers.

The legal landscape remains daunting, as he could face various charges, from conspiracy to civil rights violations. Despite the lasting effects on his reputation, his family, and many others, there’s still no justice served regarding Russiagate—time is ticking, especially with the midterm elections approaching.

Recent developments hint at the investigation being on the brink of revelations, particularly following the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey for misleading Congress. With Biden’s judges now presiding, the possibility of justice seems precarious, especially since prior federal prosecutors from Trump’s circle appeared stagnant on the case.

This situation prompts two pressing inquiries. First, why would someone implicated choose to serve as a U.S. attorney? Secondly, how many others within Trump’s camp are avoiding accountability in the wake of Russiagate?

Trump needs to address this urgency decisively and perhaps distance himself from those who aren’t pulling their weight.

It’s disheartening to note that many officials from the Trump administration have, at times, spoken negatively about him. A recent report brought to light troubling instances from his initial term, which reflect a lack of support from those he’d appointed.

John Durham, appointed to investigate Russiagate, has had limited success, achieving only a handful of indictments in very challenging jurisdictions. There seems to be glimmers of hope as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida begins to issue subpoenas related to the case, hinting at potential indictments ahead. Notably, Trump even won a significant defamation lawsuit which could bolster his standing.

Selection of juries will be particularly crucial in this context, especially in Fort Pierce, where local support for Trump is strong, outperforming many other districts.

Some might wonder about the roles of Congress and the Supreme Court. Wouldn’t they step in? There’s potential for a Republican-controlled Congress to impeach judges who misinterpret laws to target Trump, yet currently, no public hearings are being called, which could result in dire electoral consequences.

Likewise, while the Supreme Court could intervene against activist judges, it hasn’t taken such actions. This seems rooted in earlier appointments by Trump, who perhaps failed to secure a consistently supportive court when he could have.

Trump ultimately bears the responsibility for navigating these challenges swiftly. There is still an opportunity for him to shape a legacy that places him among America’s esteemed leaders. However, if he fails to seek justice for himself and those close to him involved in Russiagate, he risks being remembered as weak and humiliated—a legacy that would resonate poorly with his supporters. Choosing wisely is crucial for him right now.
